Stock Market today: Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty dropped today (Wednesday, August 6) as the RBI MPC decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.50 per cent. The indices started the day on a flat note but slipped as the session progressed. At 10:40 AM, the BSE Sensex fell 20 points or 0.25 per cent to trade at 80519. Likewise, the Nifty 50 index was down 77 points or 0.31 per cent to trade at 24,572. On the sectoral front, the Nifty Bank index too traded in the red, giving up the initial gains post announcement of the MPC decision. The 12-share index slipped a meagre 55 points or 0.22 pr cent to trade at 55,310 at 10:40 AM. Nifty IT and Pharma were down more than 1 per cent each while the Realty index cracked over 2 per cent. Post MPC outcome, 13 shares traded in green in the Sensex pack while remaining 17 were in the red. Asian Paints, Trent, Kotak Mahindra Bank, BEL and HUL were top movers while Tech Mahindra, Eternal, Infosys, Bajaj Finance and TCS cracked more than 1 per cent each. In the Nifty 50, 17 shares advanced while 33 declined.Announcing the outcome after a three-day deliberation, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra today said that the six-member panel voted unanimously to keep the policy repo rate at 5.5 per cent. Additionally, he mentioned that the MPC has decided to continue with the neutral stance.VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, said that President Donald Trump's rhetoric and actions will continue to weigh on markets in the near-term. "India's response to the rhetoric and actions, so far, has been subdued and, of late, strong and measured. India is unlikely to concede to the unjustifiable and unreasonable demands of the US administration.""This means there will be short-term pains for the economy in terms of lower exports and a marginal hit to our GDP growth in FY26, with the GDP growth declining to around 6.2 per cent from 6.5 per cent estimated earlier. Corporate earnings may also take a minor hit," he said.Earlier on Tuesday, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex lost 308.47 points or 0.38 per cent to close at 80710.25. The NSE Nifty went down by 73.20 points or 0.30 per cent to close at 24649.55. The Nifty Bank index, which tracks the movement top 12 listed banks of the country, closed 259.10 points or 0.47 per cent down at 55,360.25.orth Rs 3,840 crore.
