Karur, Tamil Nadu:
The death toll from the tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay’s rally in Karur has risen to 41, following the death of a 60-year-old woman, Suguna, on Sunday night, September 28, 2025. She had been undergoing treatment for critical injuries sustained during the incident but could not be saved.
The stampede occurred during a massive public gathering organized as part of Vijay’s political outreach. Thousands had assembled at the venue, and overcrowding is believed to have triggered the sudden rush that led to casualties. While several injured persons are still receiving treatment at hospitals, officials have warned that the toll could rise further if critical patients do not recover.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the mishap, focusing on crowd management lapses and safety arrangements at the rally. Political leaders across Tamil Nadu have expressed their condolences to the bereaved families, while calls are growing for stronger safety protocols at large-scale political events to prevent such tragedies in the future.
