Delhi Projects: Centre approves Rs 24k cr! Major tunnel to ease Mahipalpur-Vasant Kunj traffic

The Centre has approved multiple projects for Delhi worth Rs 24,000 crore. CM Rekha Gupta on Sunday, June 8 stated that the government has given green signal for several projects to streamline traffic and reduce pollution in Delhi and surrounding areas. The projects will include a five-km tunnel between Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) and Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj), as per a PTI report. She has called this project the "foundation for the Delhi of the future." At an estimated cost of Rs 3,500 crore the tunnel will be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Gupta said. The CM further revealed that these projects were approved during a recent meeting with the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The work of the project is expected to start by next year, as per the CM. She further added that the tunnel will consist of two underground tubes, with each tube having three lanes -- totalling to six lanes, which will offer a signal-free alternate route between South Delhi and Dwarka/Gurugram, as per the PTI report. Additionally, the tunnel will be equipped with modern facilities including electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, fire safety, CCTV surveillance, control rooms, emergency exits, and cross-passages. Prices up 5X in 14 yrsGupta elaborated that the upcoming 5-km tunnel will significantly ease traffic congestion on Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and National Highway 48 (NH-48), the PTI report said. Not only this, the tunnel will also serve as a major connector between Central/East Delhi and several key expressways and highways including the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B) via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway, the CM said, as per the PTI report.
