Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the long-awaited Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro on August 10, in what is being seen as a major milestone in the city’s urban transport journey. The announcement was made by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday.Alongside the Yellow Line launch, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project, marking a key expansion push under the third term of the Modi government.What is the Yellow Line?The Yellow Line stretches 19.15 km, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra with 16 stations along the route. It passes through key areas like Silk Board Junction, BTM Layout, Electronic City, and Bommasandra Industrial Area.The project cost is estimated at Rs 5,056.99 crore, according to PTI reports. The line is designed to serve up to eight lakh commuters daily, providing a much-needed public transport option for South Bengaluru, which has seen rapid residential and commercial growth in recent years.Areas like the Silk Board Junction, long plagued by severe traffic congestion, are expected to benefit significantly from the line’s operation.Launch scheduled before Independence DayBengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya said the Yellow Line was completed on schedule due to the Prime Minister’s “personal insistence,” ensuring that the metro would be ready for operations by August 15. The inauguration has now been brought forward to August 10.Phase 3 foundation stone to be laidAlong with the Yellow Line launch, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for Namma Metro Phase 3, a new 44.65-km expansion with an estimated cost of Rs 15,611 crore. This project was approved within the first 100 days of the Modi government's third term.Phase 3 aims to bring metro access to more neighbourhoods and improve last-mile connectivity. When combined with the Yellow Line, the new expansion is expected to benefit nearly 25 lakh residents of Bengaluru South.A step toward decongesting BengaluruOfficials say the metro expansion reflects the broader goal of easing Bengaluru’s traffic woes and encouraging more residents to shift from private vehicles to mass transit.With the city’s southern belt becoming more crowded, the Yellow Line is expected to play a vital role in reducing commute times, cutting pollution, and supporting sustainable urban planning.With the August 10 launch, Bengaluru moves closer to a more connected and commuter-friendly future.
