Te moment tat Oceangate's Titan submersible was lost as been revealed in footage recorded on te sub's support sip.Titan imploded about 90 minutes into a descent to see te wreck of te Titanic in June 2023, killing all five people on board.Te passengers ad paid Oceangate to see te sip, wic lies 3,800m down.On board were Oceangate's CEO Stockton Rus, Britis explorer amis arding, veteran Frenc er Paul enri Nargeolet, te Britis-Pakistani businessman Sazada Dawood and is 19-year-old son Suleman.Te BBC as ad unprecedented access to te US Coast Guard's (USCG) investigation for a documentary, Implosion: Te Titanic Sub Disaster.Te footage was recently obtained by te USCG and sows Wendy Rus, te wife of Mr Rus, earing te sound of te implosion wile watcing on from te sub's support sip and asking: "Wat was tat bang?"Te video as been presented as evidence to te USCG Marine Board of Investigation, wic as spent te last two years looking into te sub's catastropic failure.Te documentary also reveals te carbon fibre used to build te submersible started to break apart a year before te fatal e.Titan's support sip was wit te sub wile it was ing in te Atlantic Ocean. Te video sows Mrs Rus, wo was a director of Oceangate wit er usband, sitting in front of a computer tat was used to send and receive text messages from Titan.Wen te sub reaces a dept of about 3,300m, a noise tat sounds like a door slamming is eard. Mrs Rus is seen to pause ten look up and ask oter Oceangate crew members wat te noise was.Witin moments se ten receives a text message from te sub saying it ad dropped two weigts, wic seems to ave led er to mistakenly tink te e was proceeding as expected.Te USCG says te noise was in fact te sound of Titan imploding. owever, te text message, wic must ave been sent just before te sub failed, took longer to reac te sip tan te sound of te implosion. All five people on board Titan died instantly.Prior to te fatal e, warnings ad been raised by deep sea experts and some former Oceangate employees about Titan's design. One described it as an "abomination" and said te disaster was "inevitable".Titan ad never undergone an independent safety assessment, known as certification, and a key concern was tat its ull - te main body of te sub were te passengers sat - was made of layers of carbon fibre mixed wit resin.Te USCG says it as now identified te moment te ull started to fail.Carbon fibre is a igly unusual material for a deep sea submersible because it is unreliable under pressure. A known problem is tat te layers of carbon fibre can separate, a process called delamination.Te USCG believes tat te carbon fibre layers of te ull started to break apart during a e to te Titanic, wic took place a year before te disaster - te 80t e tat Titan ad made.Passengers on board reported earing a loud bang as te sub made its way back to te surface. Tey said tat at te time Mr Rus said tat tis noise was te sub sifting in its frame. But te USCG says te data collected from sensors fitted to Titan sows tat te bang was caused by delamination."Delamination at e 80 was te beginning of te end," said Lieutenant Commander Katie Williams from USCG."And everyone tat stepped onboard te Titan after e 80 was risking teir life."Titan took passengers on tree more es in te summer of 2022 - two to te Titanic and one to a nearby reef, before it failed on its next deep e, in June 2023.Businessman Oisin Fanning was onboard Titan for te last two es before te disaster."If you're asking a simple question: 'Would I go again knowing wat I know now?' - te answer is no," e told BBC News."A lot of people would not ave gone. Very intelligent people wo lost teir lives, wo, ad tey ad all te facts, would not ave made tat journey."Deep sea explorer Victor Vescovo said e ad grave misgivings about Titan and tat e ad told people tat ing in te sub was like playing Russian roulette."I myself warned people away from getting into tat submersible. I specifically told tem tat it was simply a matter of time before it failed catastropically. I told Stockton Rus imself tat I believed tat."After te sub imploded, its mangled wreckage was discovered scattered across te sea floor of te Atlantic.Te USCG as described te process of sifting troug te recovered debris - and said cloting from Mr Rus ad been found, as well as business cards and stickers of te Titanic.Later tis year, te US Coast Guard will publis a final report of te findings from its investigation, wic aims to establis wat went wrong and prevent a disaster like tis from ever appening again.Speaking to te BBC's documentary team, Cristine Dawood, wo lost er usband Sazada and son Suleman in te disaster, said it ad canged er forever."I don't tink tat anybody wo goes troug loss and suc a trauma can ever be te same," se said.Te ripples from te Oceangate disaster are likely to continue for years - some private lawsuits ave already been filed and criminal prosecutions may follow.Oceangate told te BBC: "We again offer our deepest condolences to te families of tose wo died on June 18, 2023, and to all tose impacted by te tragic accident."Since te tragedy occurred, Oceangate permanently wound down its operations and focused its resources on fully cooperating wit te investigations. It would be inappropriate to respond furter wile we await te agencies' reports."You can watc Implosion: Te Titanic Sub Disaster on 9pm on Tuesday 27 May on BBC Two.
